    Matt's Top Tip -

'When carp fishing in the margins it is often a good trick to leave your line very slack so it comes to rest on the lake bed. When everything is limp, clip your bobbin on and leave the line 'droopy'. This tactic stops the carp bumping into the line whilst feeding as monofilament that's under tension can sometimes be seen, and felt, by a wary fish causing it to leave the swim.'

  • A large capacity power reel for deep sea fishing. It features a high capacity spool design, level wind for improved line lay, ultra smooth ball bearings, a counter-balanced handle and is ergonomicaly styled. The target species are cod, pollock, ling, tope, conger eel, shark, turbot, ray and dogfish. Line Capacity: 200 m/0.45 mm, 180 yds/20 lb, Gear Ratio: 3.8:1.

    Matt's Top Tip -

'It is important to load your line on the reel under some form of tension as it will bed down correctly on the spool and reduce the risk of tangles. An easy way of achieving this - even when you're alone - is to throw the spool line in a bucket of water. Next, attach your reel to your rod, tie the line on the reel's drum, and steadily wind through your fingers ensuring a nice even spread of monofilament.'

    Matt's Top Tip -

'Fresh bait is key to catching as the saltwater will rinse out the flavour of worms and fish very quickly. With this in mind it pays to regularly re-cast. Don't just throw out your rig and wait for hours, change your bait every 30 minutes. It can also be worthwhile having a variety of options to try. Cocktails - a mixture of two baits - will also produce bigger specimens.'

  • Weigh and record your catches with these fish-friendly scales. A set of scales is a good addition to every anglers kit. When weighing your fish, you must use a sling to keep your catch safe - never just hook under its gills as this will cause lasting damage.

The target species are carp, pike, barbel, bass, mackerel, wrasse and pollock. Line Capacity: 240 m/0.40 mm, 210 yds/15 lb, Gear Ratio: 5.2:1.

    Matt's Top Tip -

'Big fish can often be found in the margins but there will be occasions when species like carp and pike can only be located at range. You may see them jumping features. A long cast can only be achieved by loading your spool right to the lip with line. If the line isn't 'flush' with the lip of the spool you will encounter friction when casting, reducing your distance.'
