What is an iPhone?

An iPhone is a smartphone produced by Apple, bringing together a computer, phone, music player, and camera all in one sleek, handheld device. They run on Apple’s highly rated operating system (iOS), which keeps all your apps stored and organised, as well as providing first-rate protection for all your personal data.

Each iPhone model is re-released with updated features every year to 18 months (typically each September). Deciding whether to go for one of the latest generation iPhones or to pick a slightly older one mostly depends on your budget, usage needs, and how important having the latest features and longest support lifespan is to you.

What iPhones types are there?

Apple’s iPhone lineup has evolved to offer a small selection of models with differing features and price points. There are four core iPhones – the standard model, Air, Pro and Pro Max - which usually get updated every 12 months. The most recent arrival (in March 2026) is iPhone 17e, which is the most budget-friendly option. Let’s take a look at what each iPhone offers:

Standard

This all-rounder offers versatile features at a price point that, while not cheap, remains within the reach of most customers. A considered investment. Excellent screen technology, powerful cameras, long battery life and first-rate security all housed in a reasonably compact, easy-to-handle phone, including the latest model, iPhone 17.

Air

Arriving in September 2025, this is the thinnest-ever iPhone at just 5.6mm and weighs only 165g, despite featuring a 6.5-inch Super Retina XDR display with 120Hz ProMotion. It's made from super-tough Titanium and covered in scratch-resistant Ceramic Shield 2 glass, so this new-look iPhone Air is super sleek and equally durable.

Pro

iPhone Pro models are for those who demand top-tier performance, advanced features and premium design. We’re talking the designers, creatives, and power users who wants to shoot and edit high-quality images and videos directly from their phone. The camera hardware and image/video capability really shine – and iPhone 17 Pro’s triple 48-megapixel lens rear camera includes 8x optical-style zoom and high framerate HDR is the latest to impress. We also love the 31-hour battery life!

Pro Max

Pro Max’s starring role as the flagship model in the iPhone lineup is based on delivering the most advanced features and capabilities. It’s also the biggest with the longest-lasting battery life (39 hours with iPhone 17 Pro Max). Perfect for professionals, creatives, and tech lovers who require top-tier performance, exceptional photography capabilities, and a truly dazzling display. iPhone 17 Pro Max has the same superb camera set-up as the Pro, but with a 6.9-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display and an extra six hours of battery life.

e

Offers a relatively affordable and compact iPhone experience incorporating some of the latest features from higher-end models while remaining competitively priced. A perfect introduction to the Apple world.

Older models

With the arrival of the iPhone 17 range, the only older models still in production are the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, which have now dropped in price. However, remaining stocks of other models can still be found for a while after a new range lands, including the iPhone 15. But it’s important to remember that Apple provide updates for six to seven years after a product is launched, so older products won’t be covered for as long.

How to decide which iPhone to buy

Budget

Just how much you should spend depends on your budget and what you want from your iPhone. Cheapest in the current range is iPhone 17e starting at £599*, with iPhone 17 available from £799*. iPhone Air starts at £999 and iPhone 17 Pro costs from £1099* (now with 256GB as minimum storage).

If having the latest model isn’t essential, it’s worth checking out how much the older iPhones have dropped in price since iPhone 17 range arrived. iPhone 16 is now reduced to start at £699*, while iPhone 15 can be found from £599*. You can also cut the cost by trading in your old device using Very’s trade-in partnership with MTR.

Usage Needs

To help you find your perfect iPhone, let’s think about what you will be using it for:

Size and Design Preferences

iPhones are stylish and very easy to handle. Slim with an uncluttered design, this is all about less means more. iPhone 17e is the smallest in the current range, with a 6.06-inch screen, while being just 7.8mm thin and weighing 167g. iPhone 17 is slightly bigger thanks to its 6.3-inch display, as well as being 7.95 thick and weighing 10g more. The super-skinny iPhone Air is just 5.6mm thin and weighs only 165g, despite  its 6.5-inch screen, which is perfect for anyone wants a phone that’s easy to handle, especially when you’re also holding a takeaway coffee or your shopping! iPhone 17 Pro has a 6.3-inch display, weighs 204g, and has a width of 8.75mm. iPhone 17 Pro Max is definitely the big beast, with its 6.9-inch display and 231g weight, though it’s as thin as the Pro at 8.75mm, so still not too awkward to handle.

Battery Life

iPhone 17 series brings a welcome leap in battery longevity across all models, thanks to the efficiency of the new A19 and A19 Pro chips. The impressive new battery life figures are:

  • iPhone 17 - 30 hours video playback, 27 hours video streaming

  • iPhone Air - 27 hours video playback, 22 hours video streaming

  • iPhone 17 Pro - 33 hours video playback, 30 hours video streaming

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max - 39 hours video playback, 35 hours video streaming

  • iPhone 17e - 26 hours video playback, 21 hours video streaming

Future-Proofing

Apple say the iPhone 17 range is designed for longevity based on three core principles: durability, repairability and software updates. The aluminium shell is famously durable and the display on all models also features Ceramic Shield 2, which Apple say is 3x tougher than any other smartphone glass. You also get Ceramic Shield on the back with iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max for extra protection.

Apple Intelligence, is baked into the latest iOS 26 software, transforming the way we interact with iPhone (and other devices), from the integration of ChatGPT to enhanced photo editing. This technology is developing rapidly, so we can expect lots of updates with new and improved features.

Camera Quality

iPhones have a long-standing reputation for featuring excellent cameras, and the iPhone 17 range backs that up with some exciting developments. Firstly, we all love sharing a good selfie, and the new 18-megapixel (MP) Center Stage camera on the front of all new models (apart from iPhone 17e) features a larger, square sensor, which means selfies and video calls look better and can capture more of the scene - so you won’t have to twist and stretch your arm just to get everyone in frame! You can even take photos and videos in portrait or landscape while holding your phone vertically! Center Stage automatically keeps you in frame during video calls if you move around too. Finally, Dual Capture lets you record with front and rear cameras simultaneously – perfect for reaction shots!

Best iPhone For Your Needs

Now we’ve looked at all the iPhone types in depth, it’s time to consider which are best suited to particular interests or your specific need for an important function. Understanding your best match will help you get the most from your budget.

Best iPhone for Photography

iPhone 17 Pro

iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max share exactly the same camera set-up nowadays. That means a triple-lens rear camera with 48MP Main sensor, a 48MP Ultra-Wide lens, and a 48MP Telephoto sensor. If you’re a designer, pro-level photog, or just want your socials to look next-level, this supercharged combo’s ability to shoot pro-grade images is a real winner.

Best iPhone for Battery Life

iPhone 17 Pro Max

iPhone 17 Pro Max is a workhorse, delivering up to 39 hours of video playback - the longest-ever battery life in an iPhone. That means you can go two days of standard usage before needing a recharge - or more! This big step-up in longevity (up from 33 hours for iPhone 16 Pro Max) is thanks to the excellence of the A19 Pro chip, which runs with outstanding efficiency and is supported by vapour chamber cooling.

Best Value for Money

iPhone 17

We believe iPhone 17 offers the best bang for your buck. iPhone 16e is cheaper, but you miss out on some crucial features, including better cameras at the front and back, plus the handy Camera Control button, which lets you instantly bring up the camera with one press. iPhone 17 has an upgraded 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR display, which features a 120Hz refresh rate (the 16e is 60Hz) and screen brightness that peaks at 3,000 nits outdoors to ensure you can always see it clearly (iPhone 16e has 1,200 nits). We also love the Dynamic Island function, which is great for switching up whatever music you’re listening to and keeping an eye on when your Uber is due to arrive. Finally, iPhone 17 has a longer battery life and is MagSafe compatible (unlike the 16e), which is really handy if you’re upgrading and already have one of those handy magnetic chargers at home.

Best iPhone for Kids

iPhone 17e

Kids - especially teenagers - always have their eye on the latest tech. As well as being a gadget they’ll love, an iPhone also offers Apple’s famously strong security, plus helpful parental controls so you can monitor their usage through the Screen Time feature. You can stop them accessing any apps, features, and content you feel are unsuitable, and also set Downtime periods when access to specific apps is blocked, so no more YouTube and TikTok after lights out!
