Seeking a character to compete with Mario, games designer Naoto Oshima came up with Sonic in 1991. The little blue hedgehog was originally called Mr Needlemouse, but since his fortunate name change to Sonic, hes become one of the best loved video game characters of all time along with his sidekick Tails and the infamous Dr Robotnik.
