The Simpsons started as five minute segments on the Tracey Ullman comedy show in 1987, and cartoonist Matt Groening used the names of his own family to create Homer, Marge, Lisa and Maggie (though he switched his own name for Bart at the last minute). Its since become the longest running scripted show in TV history, known to everyone from Aberystwyth to Zagreb.
