Tips on better sleep patterns = a happier you!

Sleep deprivation has a huge impact on our health and well-being and can negatively affect concentration, mood, personality and judgment. It can also increase our risk for medical conditions such diabetes and high blood pressure. The effects of sleep deprivation will worsen over time and many people who suffer from this aren’t fully aware of the negative effects it can have on their lives. Thankfully, we do have the ability to take control of many of these factors ourselves! Try the steps below to get started on your journey to better sleep:

1. We all have an internal clock that allows us to sleep more easily at certain times of the day and may dictate times of increased drowsiness if we are sleep deprived. Trying to avoid daytime naps and a starting a regular bedtime routine can shift this pattern.

2. Creating and maintaining an appropriate sleep environment is very important. This means it should be a quiet, comfortable sleep area that is free from distractions and ideally also free from screens. It also helps to avoid screens for a couple of hours before heading to bed.

3. The transition from wake to sleep requires you to relax. Apart from establishing a comfortable sleeping environment as mentioned, if you find falling to sleep challenging then routine exercise during the day and avoiding caffeine is helpful.

4. Why not build your own army of sleep wellness products? From those encouraging your body to increase melanin production (the sleep hormone) to relaxing products allowing you to wind down and feel ready for bed, a full night’s sleep will leave you feeling refreshed with improved mood and energy levels. Something we could all do with this coming year!
